#OnThisDay - 2 Jan 1850 - It wasn't a great start to the year for The Workhouse Master as the District Auditor ruled that the Master’s Day Book was ‘imperfectly kept’ and informed the Poor Law Commission of the problem. The Master, Thomas Weightman, wrote a lengthy letter in his defence, detailing how he filled in the book in – this gave details of day to day transactions, work undertaken, stores coming in, what was used daily and clothing handed in and out. He was told to do better in future but book keeping remained a problem and he was pulled up several times after this incident. #workhouse #southwell #ntworkhouse #southwellworkhouse #nottinghamshire #lovenotts #notts #midlands #nt #nationaltrust #specialplaces #Victorian #poverty #welfare #britain #british #socialhistory #heritage #history #bookkeeping #fromthearchives #igersuk #igersengland by ntworkhouse
