Heritage Photos: #CGT2015 #Connect #Explore #Protect #PhilippineCordilleraTrail As we commemorate our departed loved ones this weekend, we would like to share with you an ancient practice by the people of Ibaloi, a dominant ethno-linquistic group in Kabayan (a town in Benguet province) of mummifying their dead. The long traditional practice began before the Spanish colonization and was abandoned when Christianity started to spread in Benguet during the Spanish period. Mummification uses salt and herbs on the body before setting it on fire. The whole process takes almost two years until it finally gets rid of body fluids. The body is then put to rest in a pinewood coffin and placed inside a man-made cave or a dug-out rock. The Kabayan Mummy burial caves has more than 200 man-made burial caves of which 15 has preserved human mummies. The Kabayan Mummy burial caves is in the tentative list of Unesco's World Heritage List.
