Ochre is the distinctive colour of the stone in this part of North West Dorset. It is ham stone. Quarried nearby at aptly named Ham Hill. Sherborne Abbey is a magnificent sight. Standing in the town that was the capital of the ancient Saxon kingdom called Wessex. There are many stories and histories attached to the Abbey. Two of King Alfred's brothers lay at rest hear. Some of the 15th century medieval glass has been restored to form a stained glass window. You can take Foot Trails trail around the hidden parts of the town to discover more about Sherborne on our walking trip called Somerset Knights Quest. A great way to discover the Abbey and other historic sites, villages, market towns and landscapes in the region. #abbey #hamstone #tower #windows #stained glass #history #heritage #time #explore #travel #trails #walking #hiking #UK #Dorset #Britain #adventure #ukpotd #ig_britishisles #journey by foottrailsuk
