Interesting how Project 200 and possibility of waterfront freeway contributed to formation of Gastown area as we know it today. In the 1960s, citizens became concerned with preserving Gastown's distinctive and historic architecture, which like the nearby Chinatown and Strathcona was scheduled to be demolished to build a major freeway into the city's downtown. So provincial government was pressured to declare the area a historical site in 1971, protecting its heritage buildings to this day. So now there are two Vancouvers, each heading in a different direction: one, with its 19th-century grid and streetcar fabric still intact, serving as a high-density model for the 21st century. The other, as the project manager for the freeway expansion recently said, "completing the transportation vision of the 1960s." #vanarch #vancouver #downtown #architecture #freeway #project200 #harbourcentre #vancouverlookout #history #heritage #vansun360 #vancitybuzz #explorevancity #tourcanada #imagesofcanada #history #heritage #eastside #gastown #archifreaks #archilovers #archdaily #veryvancouver #beautifulbc #canada #vancity #yvrdesign #architectureporn #architecturelovers #explorevancouver by asaddassa
